What is Breast Implant Removal?

A breast implant removal (explant) procedure removes, repositions, or replaces a woman’s implants. This often happens when the implants are over ten years old, or when a woman is experiencing dissatisfaction with how her implants look or feel. Breast implant removal can also be done for health reasons.

Most Common Reasons For Breast Implant Removal

  • Calcium buildup
  • The patient never got used to the implants
  • Patient feels that their implants are the wrong shape or size
  • The implant has become folded, wrinkled, or deflated
  • The implant is leaking or ruptured
  • Implants have migrated due to weight loss, weight gain, or pregnancy
  • The development of dead tissues around the breast implant
  • Capsular contracture
  • Infection and/or bleeding
  • Complications from previous surgery
  • Patient no longer likes the way the implants look and/or feel
  • Hardening of the breast tissue

Who Are the Best Candidates For Breast Implant Removal?

Candidates in Phoenix for breast implant removal are women who are dissatisfied with their implants or who are experiencing complications that affect their health, comfort, or appearance. Candidates may include those with implant rupture, capsular contracture, shifting or asymmetry, or pain caused by scar tissue. Women who feel their implants no longer suit their lifestyle, body shape, or personal aesthetic are also excellent candidates. As with any surgery, patients should be in good general health, avoid smoking, and have realistic expectations about how their breasts will look after removal.

What Are the Benefits of Breast Implant Removal?

Breast implant removal provides many benefits for women who are experiencing issues or who simply wish to return to a more natural appearance. One of the most significant advantages is improved comfort, because many women report relief from physical symptoms such as tightness, pain, or heaviness in the chest once their implants are removed. Health benefits may also include resolving complications such as capsular contracture, ruptured implants, or concerns related to breast implant illness (BII). In addition, removal allows women to restore their natural body proportions and eliminate the maintenance or potential future surgeries that implants sometimes require.

What’s the First Step?

Breast implant removal may be necessary for several reasons. To determine the best course of action, including whether to remove them completely or to replace them, your first step will be to consult with Dr. Craft in Phoenix, AZ. During this appointment, you discuss your concerns, medical history, and reasons for the removal in detail. This allows you to make the decision whether to remove them altogether or remove them and opt for a different breast enhancement procedure. Once this is decided, a surgical plan will be developed before your pre-operative visit, and the date of surgery can be scheduled.

What to Expect on the Day of Breast Implant Removal Surgery

Breast implant removal surgery is performed with the patient under regional nerve blocks and IV anesthesia, and takes between one and three hours. During your consultation with Dr. Craft, he will discuss where the incisions will be made, as well as a step-by-step of everything that will happen during the operation.

Dr. Craft will carefully make an incision along the lower (inframammary) fold of your breast, or an incision around or below the areola. He will perform either a breast implant removal alone, a breast implant removal with a breast lift, or a deflation procedure.

With a breast implant removal, the incisions are made in the same location as the initial breast surgery. Dr. Craft may also remove the capsule (layer of scar tissue that forms around the implant) during this procedure. This can be done as an “en bloc” removal, where the implant and the capsule are removed together without cutting into the capsule and removing them separately.

If Dr. Craft is also performing a breast lift with the breast explant in Scottsdale, he will gently remove excess breast skin and tighten the breast tissue. This is typical for women whose breast skin has been stretched.

For patients with saline implants, Dr. Craft offers an in-office deflation and removal procedure that is both non-surgical and performed under local anesthesia. Through a small incision, the implant is safely deflated and removed right in the office—no general anesthesia or hospital stay required. Many women love this option, as it’s quick, significantly less expensive, and allows them to drive themselves home the same day. In some cases, patients may still choose to undergo a breast lift or implant replacement at a later time, depending on their aesthetic goals and how their tissue responds post-deflation.

Breast Implant Removal Recovery

After a breast implant removal, most women are able to return to work in five days. You will need to avoid lifting anything heavy or doing high-intensity exercise for six weeks after the procedure.

Women who have implants removed because of capsular contracture will experience more discomfort and a longer recovery period. Those who have a breast lift along with the implant removal may have a tight, heavy feeling in their breasts during recovery.

How Much Does Breast Implant Removal Cost in Phoenix, AZ?

The cost of Breast Implant Removal in Scottsdale and the greater Phoenix area can vary based on the complexity of the procedure, the type of implants, whether additional treatments (like a breast lift or capsule removal) are needed, and the type of anesthesia used. On average, the price ranges between $5,000 and $10,000, which typically includes the surgeon’s fee, anesthesia, operating facility costs, and post-operative garments.

For patients with saline implants, removal under local anesthesia in the office is a simpler, less invasive option—and also less costly. This in-office approach offers a more affordable solution for those who qualify. Financing options are available to make all procedures more accessible, and Dr. Craft’s team is happy to walk you through pricing and payment plans during your consultation.
