What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a skin rejuvenation treatment that enhances the skin’s texture by using a handheld device. This device includes very small needles (like acupuncture needles) to puncture the skin, causing thousands of tiny “micro injuries” that cause the formation of new collagen and skin tissue. The result is smoother, firmer, more toned skin.

What Does Microneedling Treat?

Microneedling is mostly used on the face, and can greatly improve a variety of trouble spots, including:

  • Scars
  • Wrinkles
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Enlarged pores
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Dull skin
  • Sagging skin

How Microneedling Works

The micro-injuries caused by the device’s tiny needles trigger the body’s natural healing process. This healing process sends collagen and elastin to repair and rejuvenate the skin, replacing micro-injuries with new dermal tissues and blood vessels. This helps the skin to become thicker, more elastic, and more youthful. Microneedling can also be paired with antioxidants and vitamins to trigger even more new collagen.

Who Are the Best Candidates For Microneedling?

While microneedling can address many concerns, those in the Phoenix area who can benefit most from the treatment are individuals with one or more of the aforementioned concerns and who have realistic expectations about the treatment. Those who should not receive treatment include individuals with active acne (or those taking acne medications), those undergoing cancer treatment, those with moles or skin tags, and those with eczema or psoriasis. If you’re not sure whether you’re a suitable candidate, consult with one of our aesthetic advisors.

What Are the Benefits of Microneedling?

Although it is a minimally invasive treatment, microneedling can address a wide range of concerns for patients, making it a popular choice for many. Some of the issues that microneedling can combat are:

  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Texture
  • Acne scars
  • Sun Damage
  • Enlarged pores
  • Loose skin
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Stretch marks
  • Alopecia

If you have specific concerns that you’re unsure whether microneedling can address, it’s best to speak with one of our aestheticians in Scottsdale for a professional consultation.

What to Expect on the Day of Microneedling Treatment

Microneedling is very popular due to its minimal pain, convenience, and beautiful results. Treatments typically take 30 to 45 minutes.

At the beginning of your treatment, a topical numbing cream will be applied to your skin to minimize discomfort. The hand-held microneedling device will be passed over your face. Due to the numbing agent, this is very tolerable; however, some patients find that certain areas of their face are more sensitive than others. After the needling is complete, a soothing serum (or sometimes a face mask) will be applied to your skin. Dr. Craft recommends 3 to 6 microneedling treatments, depending on your specific areas of concern. Microneedling has been known to achieve the rejuvenation benefits of laser therapy with significantly shorter downtime.

Microneedling Recovery

One of the best aspects of microneedling is that it requires minimal downtime. Patients may experience temporary redness of the skin, some swelling, and pinpoint bleeding, but these symptoms are generally mild and transient. Regular skin care and activities can be resumed the next day.

Your skin may also feel raw and itchy for a day or two. The more aggressive the microneedling treatment is, the longer these side effects may last. Deeper levels of penetration in concentrated areas can mean a little more downtime.
