What is an Arm Lift & How Does it Work?

Many individuals dislike the appearance of their arms due to excess, sagging skin that develops from the elbow to the shoulder. The cause of this issue can be a result of genetics, getting older, or losing a significant amount of weight. However, an arm lift (brachioplasty) can provide patients with beautiful, slimmer, toned, and firmer upper arms.

An arm lift significantly improves the appearance of sagging skin in the underarm area by removing excess skin and fat, while also tightening and smoothing the surrounding tissue. The skin then conforms to the new shape of the arm.

Who Are the Best Candidates For an Arm Lift?

The best type of candidate for an arm lift in Phoenix:

  • Has flabby, sagging skin under the arms that is bothering them
  • Is a non-smoker in general good health
  • Is close to their ideal weight
  • Is aware of what an arm lift can do

What Are the Benefits of an Arm Lift?

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, can provide a dramatic improvement in the appearance of the upper arms. Patients experience firmer, more toned-looking arms with a smoother contour, from the elbow to the armpit. By removing excess skin and fat, the procedure addresses sagging that cannot be corrected through exercise alone.

The main benefits include improved self-confidence, a more youthful and proportionate arm appearance, and the ability to wear sleeveless clothing without feeling self-conscious. Additionally, an arm lift can help improve comfort during physical activity by eliminating the friction and excess tissue that can occur with sagging skin. Overall, the procedure creates a lasting, natural-looking improvement that enhances both appearance and quality of life.

What’s the First Step?

The procedure begins with a private consultation at CraftMD in Phoenix, where you’ll discuss your aesthetic goals, medical history, and lifestyle to determine if an arm lift is the right choice for you. Dr. Craft will conduct a thorough physical examination of the upper arms, assessing the amount of excess skin and fat, as well as overall muscle tone. The consultation also allows Dr. Craft to explain potential risks, review recovery expectations, and address any questions, ensuring you feel fully informed and confident before moving forward.

What to Expect on the Day of Arm Lift Surgery

If Dr. Craft is performing an arm lift on its own, it is done under anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. An arm lift takes 2 to 4 hours to complete.

Dr. Craft will make an incision under the arm to minimize the visibility of the scar. The incision will run the length of the elbow to the armpit.

From the incision, Dr. Craft will remove excess skin and fat. He will also smooth and tighten the underlying tissue. After this, the incision will be closed with sutures.

Arm Lift Recovery

Patients should be aware that after their arm lift, they will need to wear compression garments, dressings for their incisions, and drains may also be placed. You can also expect to have some swelling for about two weeks (although this will subside after about three days), as well as mild discomfort and bruising following the procedure. It may be helpful to elevate your arms to help with swelling. It’s important to avoid strenuous activities, including exercise, until Dr. Craft advises you that it’s okay to resume.
