If you’ve experienced an unsuccessful hernia repair, Dr. Randall Craft is an expert surgeon in the area of abdominal wall reconstruction. He is able to perform this complex procedure to repair a hernia, scarring, or damage done by the initial surgery.

What is abdominal wall reconstruction?

Abdominal wall reconstruction treats open lesions in the abdominal wall, repairs hernias, remodels the tissues, and restores the muscles after the initial surgery failed to do so. This is an important procedure for the body, as the abdominal wall protects the organs and keeps them safe. If abdominal wall reconstruction isn’t performed on a patient who needs it, the untreated hernia may continue to weaken the abdominal wall—which can cause the muscles and tissues to deteriorate.

Who gets abdominal wall reconstruction?

Abdominal wall reconstruction is a powerful procedure that can address problems that traditional hernia repair techniques cannot. Abdominal wall reconstruction benefits patients who are experiencing:

  • Incisional hernia
  • Recurring hernias
  • Post-surgery infection
  • Post-surgery lesion

Abdominal wall reconstruction surgery details

Abdominal wall reconstruction surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia, and takes 2 to 6 hours, depending on the severity of the case. He will carefully separate the layers of the abdominal wall, and will re-shape the abdominal tissues and muscles and position them correctly. He will then close the incisions with sutures.

What to expect

Abdominal wall reconstructive surgery is a complex procedure that requires some preparation and several days’ stay in a medical facility. Most patients are required to wear surgical dressing during the recovery period. You will be given detailed instructions on how to get ready for your surgery, as well as what to do once you’re able to return home. It’s extremely important to follow these directions and keep your follow-up appointments with Dr. Craft. The majority of patients are able to return to daily activities within 2 to 5 weeks, and can typically resume exercise about six weeks post-op.
